Copy Edit

Through the use of the Track Changes feature in Word, a Copy Edit is a line edit that corrects spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and also includes page and paragraph notations made in a separate document regarding errors in the rules of standard written English, including the following:

  • Sentence structure—suggestions made on how to improve
  • Shifts in tone, tense, person and number—notation
  • Subject-verb agreement—notation
  • Modifier placement–notation
  • Parallelism-description of what words don’t match in subject or number
  • Mechanics

Typical fee ranges from $2.00 to $2.50/page or .008-.01 cents/word for copy edit (Paying the higher fee means a second review is done after author makes suggested changes.)

Typical timeline*:

Up to 100 pages       3-4 days

Outside the apartment window, it the view of Springdale was dreary. and Rain fell, abruptly changing Kendall Wylie’s plans for a lakeside picnic. She wished the sun had held out for just 3 three more hours. She walked out her front door, and across the hall to her good friend Lisa’s door and knocked. When it opened, she said., “Hey Lisa, have you looked outside.?”

“Bummer, huh?” Lisa flips [verb should be past tense] her blond hair over one shoulder and bleu blew on her painted nails. Waving her hand, the door shut behind Kendall.[this is a dangling modifier—add Lisa or she as subject of phrase after comma]

“Any ideas of where else we can go so that we can salvage some fun out of this crummy day?” Kendall flopped and set down sat on the couch and then tossed her feet onto the coffee table.

As Lisa’s eyes gaze flue flew to the window, she shuddered. “It just figures. She said. “A day off from waiting on customers at the diner and we get this.”

Proofread edit
A proofread serves to check for any spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, as well as irregular spacing or paragraphing. Line numbers are added to the Word document, and notations are made in a separate document referring to the page and line number where error exists. Manuscript may be submitted in a Word document or a PDF.
Fee is .005 cents/word or $1.25/page (for no more than an average of 5 corrections/page;.0055 cents for  6-10 corrections; .006 cents for 11+/page) and turnaround time is approximately the same as for a copy edit.
